Working either within a school or community setting

If you enjoy sport and working with young people and would like to gain valuable experience working either within a school or community setting, then a Community Activator Coach apprenticeship could be for you.

Learners will be trained by qualified Teachers and sports specialists and you’ll connect with the wider agenda of promoting PE, health, and well-being through physical activity.

Gain experiences and opportunities to further your development and sporting career pathways by working alongside National Governing Bodies, County Sports Partnerships, and the Youth Sport Trust.

We currently have a large cohort of Apprentices within our partner schools across Hertfordshire, London, Durham, Liverpool and Birmingham.

The role of an Activator Coach in a school or community

  • Become a role model for PE and Sport
  • Understand the benefits of physical activity, health, and well-being for young people, families, and communities.
  • Support the delivery of physical activity, PE, and sports and health-related activities
  • Helping within the classroom
  • Delivering warm-ups and small groups within PE lessons.
  • Support and work towards the delivery of small projects such as Daily Mile, physical activity projects, and programmes
  • Contribute to teams that deliver community events, school sports competitions and festivals.

Community clubs we have forged strong partnerships with include; Wycombe Wanders Foundation, Cambridge Community Foundation, and Stevenage FC Foundation.  These clubs are advocates of hosting an apprentice in their team and we have regular apprentice opportunities based in these clubs.

How is this course delivered?

Our apprentices are based within a community or school setting and work 30 hours a week with training being delivered within through a blended learning approach involving virtual and face-to-face.

Apprentices Lead Tutors deliver and as with all apprenticeships have at least 6 hours a week off the job training.

The role involves working within a school setting and supporting the delivery of Health and well-being, Physical Activity, Physical Education and school sport.

The wider community role involves working within the local PE and school sports network to deliver competition for all the schools within the area.

Off the job training includes:

  • Attending training sessions led by a qualified teacher/tutor.
  • Completing a portfolio of evidence based on completion of research and project-based tasks.
  • Collaborate with other apprentices working in similar environments throughout the programme

Career pathways

You will find out about school-based career pathways and sporting career paths that are available and the hope would be that this apprenticeship will lead you onto your next step on the sporting career ladder.

There is a potential progression onto a further apprenticeship – if based in a school setting to a level 3 teaching assistant with PE, health and well-being focus, or level 4 sports coach in community setting.

What are the entry Requirements?

Essential requirements:
  • Excellent Interpersonal Skills
  • Communication Skills
  • Teamwork Skills

Desired not necessary requirements:*

As a minimum you will either be working towards a Functional Skills Level 2, or have a C/4 in English or Math GCSE’s.

* If required as part of your apprenticeship programme, you will attend virtual weekly Functional skills sessions.
