A Sports Coach apprenticeship is a progression pathway for sports coaches who have previous experience supporting the delivery of PE and are looking to take their coaching abilities to the next level.

 

Particularly for those looking to improve and expand their current skill set, our training programs are designed to empower you.

Additionally, by participating in our courses, you can develop your career and confidently embrace opportunities within a school setting.

You can therefore make a positive impact, enriching performance in local competitions, by increasing participation in physical activity, raising educational standards, enhancing wellbeing and driving social change.

The Apprentice will work closely with the PE lead delivering PE lessons
(the apprentice to lead if confident and effective to do so from the start – assessed by the school).

What you will learn

  • You’ll develop knowledge, skills, and behaviours relevant to the PE curriculum and broaden your understanding of how to deliver and lead a whole school high-quality PE programme.
  • Gain knowledge and skills to drive the development of the whole school PE and school sport strategy.
  • Lead and contribute to increased opportunities to deliver extra-curricular activities
  • Create opportunities to network and share good practice with other PE Leads/Co-ordinators.

    Course content:

  • Gain an understanding of how education has developed
  • Teaching Philosophy – learn how the environment influences teaching
  • Develop lesson plans and schemes of work.
  • Work with the Sports partnership to help manage competitions
  • Build skills to deliver high-quality Physical Education sessions
  • Learn how to write a curriculum overview
  • Gymnastics (once completed learners will have the knowledge and skills to deliver high-quality and safe gymnastics lessons)
  • Outdoor adventurous activities
  • Dance
  • Organising Sports events (including Sports Day)

How will you be assessed?

  • Submit a portfolio of evidence of written assignments, case studies, and presentations
  • Work-based project with presentation of findings (Plan, implement, and evaluate a unit of work) plus presentation of the IMPACT
  • Practical observation
  • Professional discussion based on the research tasks listed above.

Career pathways

  • University to study for a degree in Sport / PE / Education
    (some universities may take your Level 4 School Sports Coach Apprenticeship work as Recognised Prior Learning – Please contact universities directly to enquire)
  • Level 5 Education and Training Level 5 Diploma
  • Sports Coach in a school setting
  • Unqualified PE teacher
  • Opportunities to work in the sports industry as a coach/manager/leader

What are the entry Requirements?


Essential requirements

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills
  • Substantial experience in delivering School Sports / relevant Level 2 qualification / teacher qualification / HLTA qualification / Teaching Assistant Qualification (level 3), previous experience in a coaching setting

Desired Requirements:

  • Grade C or above or 4/5 (new grading) at GCSE in Maths
  • Grade C or above or 4/5 (new grading) at GCSE in English

How is this course delivered?

  • Discover new knowledge in live, interactive virtual sessions led by experienced teachers in their field
  • Engage in practical training days, led by qualified teachers/coaches to deliver high-quality sessions and lessons in Physical Education and School Sport
  • Collaborate with other apprentices working in similar environments throughout the programme

 

How long is the course?

  • Typically, 19 months including a 16 month training period and a three month End Point Assessment (EPA) period
