Workforce development through apprenticeships

ESF Apprenticeships offers bespoke apprenticeship training programmes aligned with the ethos of your school, ensuring innovation and support from a team of qualified teachers. This page provides employer apprenticeship information for anyone seeking to develop their workforce through apprenticeships.

Benefits of apprenticeships for the school workforce

  • Develop your workforce through the addition of an apprentice to your team
  • You can also use apprenticeship programmes as CPD training to upskill existing staff, right through to leadership level
  • Work with an established, Ofsted outstanding, award-winning, school-focused team
  • New hire apprentices can be nurtured and developed to become part of your school community and invaluable team members.
  • Deliver a consistent message throughout your school, academy, or MAT with bespoke training to align with the apprenticeship standard.

Overview

Apprentices are aged 16 or over and combine working with studying to gain skills and knowledge.

If they are new hires, you must pay the apprentice at least the minimum wage.

Your apprentice must:

  • Work with experienced staff
  • Learn job-specific skills
  • Get time for training or study during their working week (at least 20% of their normal working hours)

Apprenticeship delivery models

  • Utilise the apprenticeship levy to fund free CPD training to upskill and support existing staff.
  • Our apprentices will be based within their schools/community settings.
  • Apprentices work 30 hours a week for the duration of the apprenticeship (part-time is available but the duration of the apprenticeship would need to be extended).
  • You will need to appoint at school-based mentor who can attend regular progress reviews – typically one per term. These will be led by the apprentice’s ESF tutor and a chance to celebrate successes and set targets.
  • We deliver a blended model of training by specialist tutors who are all from teaching/SLT backgrounds.
  • For most Level 2 – 5 apprenticehips, we recommend approximately half day of release time per fortnight to allow learners to attend live online webinars, plus time to complete online self-paced learning. They may also want to attend our optional termly online SEND masterclasses that last 2-3 hours.
