Case study:

Enhancing PE through Apprenticeship Programmes at Parmiter’s School

About Parmiter’s School

Parmiter’s School is an Ofsted Outstanding co-educational, all-ability secondary academy, teaching approximately 1,430 students between the ages of 11 to 18.

For the past five years, Parmiter’s School has successfully integrated PE Teaching Assistant apprentices into its sports department. The school partnered with ESF Apprenticeships to hire young, enthusiastic apprentices to support their PE programme.

By employing PE apprenitces Parmiter’s has been able to:

  • Expand its capacity to offer a wider range of sports and activities.
  • Provide additional support in PE classes, ensuring a more inclusive and personalised approach for every student.
  • Introduce a fresh, contemporary perspective to the curriculum, encouraging students to view physical activity as a positive lifestyle choice.

Impact of PE apprentices

PE apprentices have had an overwhelmingly positive impact on the school’s PE provision and pupils. Director of Sport at Parmiter’s School, Tom Clark, highlights the significant positive impact of the apprenticeship programme:

Not only have our apprentices provided valuable support to our teachers, assisting in the implementation of engaging and effective lessons, but they have also played a pivotal role in promoting physical activity and well-being among our students. Their passion for encouraging an active lifestyle has resonated with our young learners, creating an environment where physical activity is not just a routine but a lifestyle.”

The school has also found the apprenticeship programme a useful career pathway that can be offered to some of their own school leavers. Several former students have returned as apprentices to contribute to the school community. This personal connection has resonated with current pupils, fostering a sense of teamwork, and perseverance.

Overall benefits:

Enhanced Learning Experience: Apprentices provide crucial support to teachers, allowing for more engaging and effective lessons.

Cost-Effective Investment: The additional support is a strategic, cost-effective way to improve the PE programme without a significant increase in budget.

Positive Role Models: The apprentices serve as positive influences, inspiring students to embrace an active lifestyle and fostering personal development.

Dynamic School Atmosphere: The programme has cultivated a positive, dynamic atmosphere throughout the school community.

Mr Clark highlights the value the school’s long-term relationship ESF Apprenticeships.

We are immensely grateful for the partnership with ESF Apprenticeships and the continuing support we receive throughout the apprenticeship programmes. It’s heartening to witness the growth and development of both our students and our past and present apprentices.”

I highly recommend the PE Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship, not only does it enrich the learning experience but also cultivates a positive and dynamic atmosphere within the school. Our apprentice has become an integral part of our educational journey, and we look forward to witnessing their continued positive influence.

Not only have our apprentices provided valuable support to our teachers, assisting in the implementation of engaging and effective lessons, but they have also played a pivotal role in promoting physical activity and well-being among our students.

Their passion for encouraging an active lifestyle has resonated with our young learners, creating an environment where physical activity is not just a routine but a lifestyle.
